Saatchi gifts the Nation with MOCA

Exciting news as self confessed Artoholic Charles Saatchi decides to hand over his Kings Road art gallery and a significant part of his collection  to the nation.

Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt responded by saying:

Philanthropy is central to our vision of a thriving cultural sector and this is an outstanding example of how Britain can benefit from individual acts of social responsibility

Great news for the UK, although I am a little worried about Jeremy Hunt’s statement, while philanthropy is key there remains the little issue of creating a space for and valuing creativity too.  If artists are at the behest of the wealthy that means only those with disposable means have a say in dictating what is allowed to be created, hardly a democratic path to tread.
