NICE festival new website goes live

It’s easy to get tied up in your own projects just before they go live so after a hectic week or so of all things Pride we were keen to take a breath and pop our collective Curated Place heads above the parapet to have a look around some other parts of the North West cultural and creative scene.

So, it felt like great timing when today the NICE Festival announced the launch their new website for their 2010 festival today.  If you don’t already know the NICE festival is a celebration of all things Scandinavian that has been running for the last three years over in Liverpool under the directorship of Ingi Thor Jonsson.

‘City States’ – Soren Thilo Funder

Incredible at making inspiring things happen, Ingi and his team have made it their personal mission to bring the best in Scandinavian arts, crafts, design, performance, film and everything else from the Nordic lands to the North West to celebrate the ties of a rich shared history and to create new connections between creative people here and across Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland.  The Faroes get a look in there occasionally too.

This year, for the first time, the festival is heading out of Liverpool and basing itself in Manchester (with supporting events in Liverpool and Chester) and bringing with it an amazing programme of events that showcase old masters’ work like that of Munch and Ibsen alongside the best contemporary creative output from the cold north.

The World of Moomins, Sophia Jansson comes to the Whitworth on October 26th

Although its taken me years to recover from the childhood trauma of seeing the old animations, a personal highlight has to be NICE arranging for author Tove Jansson’s niece, Sophia Jansson,to visit the Whitworth in October to read extracts from her aunt’s fabulously strange Moomin books and talk about growing up in the shadow of the Moomin Valley.

Original, ambitious and fun the NICE Scandinavian Arts Festival runs from 18th November – 2nd December with satellite events throughout the year.

Including wonderful Moomin weirdness at the Whitworth on Sunday the 24th October starting at 17:00.
